Total Eclipse got his 1st set of turntables in ’91 at the age of 14, and “learned how to cut by watching Scratch, from EPMD cut on their videos on Video Music Box.” He was also influenced by Barry B, an older DJ from the neighborhood who showed him cuts and tricks. In November ‘94 Total Eclipse entered his first DJ battle live on the air on DJ Mayhem’s college radio show on WNYU in New York City; he got first place and caught the attention of Rob Swift. Rob and Eclipse started to practice together, and Rob taught Eclipse the history of Battling and showed him how to beat juggle. “He showed me stuff that I never thought was possible – he showed me a tape of the ’90 New Music Seminar Battle between Steve D (a founding member of the X-men) and Francesca (from Italy) – it was the 1st time I saw 2 totally different and raw styles going against each other like that”. Through Rob, he became friendly with the other members of The X-men crew and started practicing with them.
These influences inspired him to take it to a new level – and it showed in ensuing battles; in March 1996, Eclipse entered the Beat Street Records DJ Battle where he took first place and received a gold bronzed Technic 1200 turntable. He entered several more battles around New York that year culminating in the International Turntables Federation Battle (ITF), where he went up against the best national and international competition. Eclipse rose to the challenge and placed first. He was shortly thereafter, inducted into the X-Men.In June of 1997, The X-ecutioners recorded their debut album “X-pressions” for Asphodel Records. One of Eclipse’s many standout moment includes his work on the track called “Turntable Exhibition” a self produced cut that displays the essence of true turntablism with Eclipse using only his two Technic 1200’s and his Vestax 05PRO mixer to create a sonic collage. The X-ecutioners have since signed a recording deal with Loud Records – the debut “Built From Scratch” will be released this fall.

Total Eclipse recorded cuts on “Equinox” for Organized Konfusion on Priority Records. This created a special bond between the group and Eclipse. Organized Konfusion’s rhymes complimented Total Eclipse’s cutting skills at such an advanced level that Organized Konfusion became his favorite rap group. He then went on to do cuts and tour with Pharoah Monch which culminated in his first TV performance on BETÕs Live in LA, which was shortly followed by a solo appearance by Total Eclipse on The Queen Latifah show where he battled a fellow New York turntablist and took live studio audience audience by storm.
Total Eclipse plans to continue his work with The X-ecutioners, as well as work on his solo album to be released on Tableturns.

Today, Public Art Films, producers of the iconic documentary, STYLE WARS, launched their campaign on Kickstarter today: “STYLE WARS: The Outtakes.” STYLE WARS needs no introduction to those who know it. For those who haven’t had the experience, it is considered one of the seminal documentaries of the 20th century. The film is not only the indispensable document of Hip Hop culture in the early years, it is also a portrait of New York City at a very dramatic moment in its history —the Bronx ablaze, the city bankrupt, citizens and public officials at each others’ throats, while the youth of the city gave birth to a cultural movement that took the world by storm and is still going on.

The goal of the Kickstarter campaign is to retrieve the film’s outtakes. One of the most intriguing buried treasures of New York’s cultural history is the thirty hours of STYLE WARS outtakes that lie in storage. STYLE WARS was edited to its 69 minute length from the original 30 hours, and there’s a lot of amazing and historically significant material there which never made it into the finished film - Burners not seen since 1982 - more spectacular breaking moves from the historic B boy battle at United Skates of America between Rock Steady and the Dynamic Rockers — Skeme and his mom have quite a bit more to say to each other. There’s more of our conversation with the late, beloved Kase 2, the King of Style. He speaks in a poetic language that intrigues us and fascinates linguists. Seen reveals his trade secrets, describing in detail how he goes to the yard to paint a train. We hear more from Dez, Shy, Dondi and all the other kings and characters that people have grown to love, even Mayor Koch!

With the money raised from Kickstarter the producers can rent the necessary studio space and equipment, pay for the labor to go to the archives, find the best clips, and get them ready to appear as extras on the new STYLE WARS HD & Blu Ray disc.

A weeklong screening of the original, groundbreaking film is being shown on PITCHFORKTV, coinciding with the Kickstarter campaign. This is the chance to see the film and read about the making of STYLE WARS.

Dj Cam will coming out from FRANCE! If you dont know about DJ Cam get on your google and google away you will find some amazing mixes, remixes and original tracks from this man. His tunes are almost entirely a hybrid of both hip-hop and jazz music, and is presented in an abstract manner. Dope stuff! I will post some mixes and tracks below so check it out. This is Cam's first time EVER in San Diego so it will be a definite treat!

DopeShoes - Originally started djing in San Diego and has since moved to New York City. DopeShoes has put out a few really nice mixes and has rocked many a party here locally and now has started to make her rounds in NYC. THIS SOUL FLEXIN' IS HONORING THE IMAGING OF JOE CONZO
Born and raised in the Bronx, Joe Conzo acquired a flair for photography at the age of nine while attending the Agnes Russell School on the campus of Columbia University; later, advancing those skills at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He grew up at the heels of his grandmother a dynamic leader and passionate activist within the minority community of the South Bronx the late Dr. Evelina Antonetty. His father, Joe Conzo Sr., was longtime confidant and historian for the late “King of Latin Music” Tito Puente. Exposure to these “politically and culturally charged” worlds had a profound effect on how he viewed his environment through the lens of a camera.

However, Joe Conzo Jr. really came of age as a young man and as a photographer at a turbulent period in New York City’s urban decay. He was part of a generation that refused to be silenced by the choke of flameengulfed South Bronx tenements and a disparaging educational system. Their defiant voices gave rise to a cultural movement known as Hip Hop. And at its early stage, Joe passionately embraced the role of photographer within the phenomenon.

The ninth installment of MdCL's monthly clubnite in LA, CHURCH, returns to Angels Piano Bar this Sunday June 5.

From the jazz club to the turntables, each month will be a musical journey with surprise guests and features. Come in early for some dinner, drinks and dessert - the live music kicks off at 9pm with a live acoustic jazz set led by MdCL on piano and guests. At 11pm for the second set MdCL transitions to his rhodes, drum machines, synths and electronic toys for a twisted club set of jazz-infused beats, and the night wraps up with a DJ set from MdCL and guests.

This month features guests: Paul Legaspi (drums), Trevor Ware (bass), Nia Andrews (vox) and some spontaneous surprises (we've had Dwight Trible, Jody Watley, Emoni Fela, Vesta Williams, Todd Simon, Leon Mobley jump up - who's next?!)... plus this month's special guest DJ: Ohmega Watts (Ubiquity).

Vincent “DJ Spinna” Williams is something of an anomaly in music. A humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields. A steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (Funk, Soul and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) with no restraints.

A cornerstone of Hip-Hop’s late 90’s indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12” singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvas for an array of that era’s lyrical giants. As an emcee in New York City, if you didn’t have a Spinna production under your belt, well, you just hadn’t accomplished all there was to accomplish. Everyone from Mos Def, Talib Kweli to Pharaohe Monch boasted Spinna beats to prove their worth to the scene. At the height of indie-kingpin Rawkus Records heyday, Spinna was in demand, also churning out timeless classics of the era from the likes of J-Live, Mr. Complex and The Polyrhythm Addicts (his all-too-brief collabo-group with Apani B., Shaabam Sadeeq and Complex).
